Tinnitus
just because no one else can hear it, doesn't mean it is not there!
Tinnitus is more common than you think. It happens to most of us at one time or another. That strange ringing, buzzing or hissing in the ears. Maybe after a loud concert. Or during a head cold. But often it fades into the background of our body noise or disappears completely.
But for some, it is intrusive and does not abate. And in this case a tinnitus assessment is recommended.
When should you seek a tinnitus assessment
You should seek audiological investigation if your tinnitus is:
1. If you only experience tinnitus in one ear,
2. Sudden onset of tinnitus with hearing loss,
3. Tinnitus accompanied by fullness or block sensation in the ear(s),
4. The tinnitus keeps your mind occupied for many hours each day,
5. The tinnitus makes you anxious,
6. The tinnitus disturbs your sleep.
What is a tinnitus Assessment?
A tinnitus assessment takes approximately 1 hour. It looks at both the sound you’re hearing and the health of the hearing system that may be contributing to it. It typically includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, a full diagnostic hearing test, middle‑ear and cochlear function checks, and specialised tinnitus measurements to understand the pitch, loudness, and impact of the sound you perceive. We also screen for factors such as stress, sound sensitivity, and medical red flags. By the end of the appointment, you’ll have a clear explanation of what’s causing your tinnitus and a personalised plan for managing it effectively. This is a 1-hour appointment. The fee is $345.00, and there are Medicare rebates with referral from a GP or Specialist.
How is severity of tinnitus reduced?
There are many approaches to reduce the severity of tinnitus, and these depend on its cause.
Tinnitus therapy focuses on reducing the intrusiveness of the sound and improving day‑to‑day comfort. Depending on your assessment results, treatment may include sound therapy, counselling and education, relaxation strategies, and management of contributing factors such as stress or hearing loss.
Often tinnitus accompanies hearing loss. Modern hearing aids are one of the most effective tools for tinnitus relief—they amplify the sounds you want to hear, reduce listening effort, and often include built‑in tinnitus sound generators to calm the auditory system.
For many people, the right combination of technology and tailored therapy significantly reduces the impact of tinnitus and restores a sense of control.
