INTENT & ZEAL bY OTICON
As far back as 1991, Oticon released the world's first automatic two-channel hearing aid that required no volume control, called the MultiFocus. They followed this up with the world's first fully digital hearing aid in 1995, the DigiFocus. In 2004, Oticon continued to push the boundaries of directional microphone technology with the Syncro — a hearing aid capable of suppressing multiple noise sources from multiple directions simultaneously. Then in 2007, Oticon introduced the Epoq, the world's first hearing aid capable of receiving audio streaming from phones and other devices.
Deep Naural NetworkIn 2021, Oticon introduced Deep Neural Network (DNN) technology into their hearing aids with the Oticon More. Traditional hearing aids used simple rules programmed by engineers — things like "turn down sounds above a certain volume" or "reduce anything that isn't coming from directly in front of you." It worked to a degree, but it was a blunt instrument. Real life is far more complex than any set of rules can capture.
A DNN allows a hearing aid to learn from real-world sound environments and then make its own decisions about which sounds are important to hear and which are not — much the same way our brain does. When we read a book on a noisy train, our brain automatically tunes out the surrounding noise. But when there's an announcement about the next station, our brain recognises it as important and listens. Oticon's DNN works in a similar way. It was trained by analysing millions of real-world sound environments — restaurants, busy roads, cocktail parties — and with that experience, it learned to focus on sounds that matter, like speech, while suppressing those that don't.
Hear conversation clearly from any directionWith the Intent and Zeal, Oticon developed DNN 2.0, trained on an even greater diversity of sounds across even more challenging and complex environments. The result is clearer, more natural hearing — with conversations from any direction easier to follow.
My Experience Test Driving Oticon Zeal
Oticon Zeal is Oticon's first recheargeable CIC hearing device with bluetooth connectivity and DNN.
I prescribed myself a set of Oticon Zeal and experienced first the DNN noise suppression. Oticon Zeal impressed me with its speech clarity and ability to suppress competing sounds.
