Hearing Aids are fun.
Unsung Medical Marvel
Hearing loss has a quiet way of stealing the fun out of life. Conversations become tiring instead of enjoyable, jokes lose their punchline halfway through, and social situations start to feel like work instead of connection. Many people slowly pull back from group settings, noisy environments, or spontaneous chats because it’s simply too hard to keep up. What was once effortless — laughing with friends, catching a comment across the room, enjoying live music, hearing birds at the beach or park — turns into something strained, frustrating, or missed altogether.
Hearing aids bring the fun back!
Hearing aids are an unsung medical marvel of the 21st century. The modern sound processor is capable of recognising different listening environments and automatically changing their settings to suit. They are capable of learning how you like to hear and personalise their settings for your listening lifestyle. They connect to your devices making your phone calls with friends and family a truly amazing experience. Audiologists in Australia undertake continuous educational development to be able to prescribe these remarkable devices to your listening lifestyle.
New to hearing aids?
Your journey to better hearing is a gentle and highly personalised process. Most people develop hearing loss gradually over many years. As sounds fade, the brain receives less stimulation and the important connections in the auditory cortex begin to weaken. This is why conversations become harder to follow, especially in background noise — and why successful hearing care is about more than simply making things louder. It’s about helping the brain reconnect with sound again.
Week 1.
We begin by carefully assessing how you hear and process speech, both in quiet and in noisy environments. These results guide an introductory hearing aid prescription set at a softer, comfortable level. This helps you to adapt to hearing new sounds, and even your own voice. In the few days, you’ll forget you are wearing hearing aids, yet hear birds outside, footsteps, subtle background details naturally. Over the first week, your brain recalibrates and makes sense of this richer soundscape — without feeling overwhelmed.
Week 2.
Your hearing aids also collect usage data, helping us understand your real-world listening needs. After one week, using this information, we fine-tune your settings to restore natural clarity and balance personalised to your hearing needs. This step-by-step approach ensures that from the very first day, your hearing feels clear, comfortable, and inspiring.
Upgrading Your Hearing Aid
When is it time to upgrade your hearing aids? This is a question asked by many people. Hearing aid technology changes significantly over four years. However, there are three main questions to be asked:
(1) Have your "hearing needs" changed?
(2) Has your hearing declined?
(3) Do your hearing aids need servicing?
At Michael Gordon Audiology we investigate these three questions. We take the time to listen to you to learn what your hearing needs are. We assess your hearing performance with your current hearing aids. If their performance is poor, we will service the hearing aids - simply replacing a part may get you back to hearing better again. However, in cases where hearing aids are not delivering results, we will perform a side-by-side comparison with newer technology. By clinically measuring the performance of your old hearing aids against newer technology we ensure you get the best from an upgrade.
AI revolution in hearing aids
Modern hearing aids use Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Hearing aid companies have taken two approaches with AI:
(1) AI Assistant. Some hearing aids use an AI assistant to help make changes to the hearing aid settings. These devices require the hearing aids to be connected to a smart phone. The user can tell the AI assistant their listening challenge and the hearing aid will make changes to its settings. Both Signia and Widex have hearing aids that use an AI assistant. AI assistant hearing aids are great for people who are comfortable using a phone app.
(2) Neural Networks. Some hearing aids use digital neural networks. These neural networks act in real time, making adjustments for optimal hearing across different situations. This is an ideal solution for people demanding automatic hearing aids they do not need to adjust. Phonak and Oticon both have neural network hearing aids.
