Child Hearing tests
Good hearing is the foundation for how children learn to speak, understand language, and connect with the world around them. That’s why checking a child’s hearing early is so important. Even common middle ear problems, like fluid or infections, can affect how clearly a child hears and may slow down their speech development. At our Caringbah clinic, Michael Gordon Audiology provide a range of hearing tests for children of all ages.
Age 12 - 30 Months: At this age visual rewards are used to condition the child to respond to acoustic stimuli. In many cases the stimuli will be in free field, however often it is possible to use headphones to obtain individual ear information.
Age 30 - 36 Months: This age group can be more difficult to assess as the child may have aged out of conditioning tests but are not quite there yet to undergo play audiometry. Play audiometry is where the child is asked to play a game, such as building a tower, each time they hear the stimuli. Often it is necessary to modify both condition response and play techniques to obtain an accurate hearing assessment.
Age 3-5 Years: Children at this age respond well to play audiometry.
Above 5 Years: These children can often be tested using similar methods as testing an adult.
Speech Testing: Depending on the age of the child various speech tests are used to assist in evaluating their hearing.
Middle Ear and Cochlea Tests: All children are given a quick test to measure the function of the middle ear and cochlea. Auditory Processing Screening Test: Some children may be given a screening test to investigate auditory processing skills. How Much Does a Hearing Test Cost?A hearing test ranges in cost from $185 to $235. Medicare rebates are available with a doctor's referral. Some tests are completely covered by the medical rebate.
